CHAMP NANAMAN of University of the Philippines led all the champions of Ateneo’s classification national table tennis championship to pay tribute to former national player Jet Yatco over the weekend at the Ateneo Blue Eagles Gym in Quezon City.

Nanaman defeated Archie Rodolfo of Pangasinan, 11-9, 11-9, 9-11, 14-12, to capture the men’s non-rank event supported by Filipino Middle East architects and former players Leo Benedicto Trillo and Richard Lim, Engineers Joel Gundao and Riogil Espino.

Yatco, 44, who recently passed away in the US after succumbing to stroke, is considered one of the best ping-pong players who represented the country in various overseas events like the Southeast Asian Games (SEAG). He served Ateneo as junior coach.

In other results, Leo De Leon of Table Tennis Association of North District (TATAND) and Philippine Air Force whipped Angelo Marcelino of Army, 11-8, 11-7, 11-5, for the Men’s Masters title.

Charmaine De Jesus of Ateneo posted 11-8, 11-7, 11-6 win against Aileen Armando to earn the Women’s Masters crown of the event organized by Yatco’s fellow ex-national players UP coach Oscar Santelices and Ateneo senior coach Floyd Lobaton. Read more…

DIFFERENT non-national, former and present national players are expected to gather on Sunday to pay tribute to former national player Jet Yatco in an exhibition match organized by fellow former national player Floyd Lobaton and professor Oscar Santelices.

With the all-out support from Jet’s friends and Filipino table tennis players who works in the middle east, the two-day event at the Ateneo Blue Eagles Gym on June 27 to 28 drew more than 100 young participants and 50 former and current national paddlers across the country.

“We did this because we honor our comrade Jet Yatco for his massive contributions in Philippine ping-pong,” said Santelices, whose two-day event is supported by Filipino middle east architects Leo Benedicto Trillo and Richard Lim, Engineers Joel Gundao and Riogil Espino.

The four overseas workers, who are based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates and Dubai, went home after knowing that their fellow table tennis player had passed away last April in the US because of stroke. Read more…
