——————————————————————————–
Help inspire others by sharing your one of a kind pingpong story
-how did you start
Allow me to share my testimony when and how i get started,in 1975 i was only 12yrs old ,i heard a sound that i can not recognize, besides in our house there is a small protestant church,and then i tried to peep in a very small hole just to see and to know what kind of sound that is?and i have found out that the two guys keep on hitting the ball with their rackets,and i ask the two of them what kind of sport is that?sobrang inosente ako nung time na iyun,then they told me this is “pingpong” ,and i ask the choir director on that church if i can try playing it,then he answered yes pls come here and i will teach you first how to hold the racket,then the following week ive ask my aunt to give me as her gift na new raketa,because after my first lesson on that day,i find a wood para lang gumawa,pero ang nakita ko ay lawanit,so ang forehand ko ay yung magaspang and sa backhand ko naman ay yung makinis at nag tataka ako bakit panay bagsak ang bola kasi nga madulas.
Then nag hanap uli ako ng kahoy,at ang nakita ko naman ay isang “palochina” yung makapal na magaan na kahoy na galing sa baguio,sabi ko ok siguro eto gamitin sa pingpong kasi nga magaan at matalbog,puro naman outside ang tira ko kasi nga sobrang talbog,so my fistrt racket was a “Lawanit” and a “Palochina”,then i received my gift from my aunt a short pimples color green and squared type pa sya and the brand is Lion.
At first sinabi ko sa parents ko na gusto kong mag tuloy sa pingpong,but my father does not want me to continue playing makakasira lang daw sa studies and walang mangyayari,so ayaw ng tatay ko na magtuloy ako,then he wants to find my racket para baliin nya,kasi nga ang tigas ng ulo ko ,nag tuloy padin ako mag laro daily na,naaddict na kasi ako eh,gusto ko kasing baliin ng tatay ko ang aking raketa para daw hinde na ako makapag patuloy pa mag laro,pero itinago kong maaigi ang aking raketa para hinde nya makita at patago akong nag tuloy mag laro at nag paturo duon sa choir director na named Yul Dugil a half Korean half Filipino a differently abled,crippled left hand and short ang kanyang left foot and also a penholder named Alfonso Medilo a Artist/Painter so sila ang nag start tlaga mag turo to me ng basics,then sumunod na si Cris Magat na by that time is a National Junior player,Cris brought me to the MPPTTC(Metro Manila Police Table tennis Club)First batch kami ni Danilo Panaguiton na mabigyan ng award na “HALL OF FAMER” then followed by Fernado”jun”Valencia ,Mario Brieva, and Susan Tayag,this club is the Original Home of the National Players, located at recto near at central market and inside the city jail and morgue that is my home club,i always practice there every day from monday to sunday and sometimes 365 days wala akong absent,even me typhoon andun padin ako ang eensayo.iniipon ko ang aking baon para lang ma ibayad ko sa trainer dun sa club which is Mr. Floyd Lobaton and sa mga madami pang mga nagturo at ang train to me, eto sila the FF:
Then i became Champ in our barangay 1976,then became champ in the University of the East in the college division1979,i beat all the varsity team there while im only third year high school.then i became a member of the national team in 1982,because of the two santelices brother’s named Oscar and tacky they endorsed me to the tatap president (P.V Gonzalez ) and to the coaching staff,to take a tryout,on that time the head coach was Mr.Philip Pigao,upon my arrival there at the small gym near ninoy aquino stadium ,kung saan ay bowling center now ng rizal memorial,ang tawag namin duon nuong araw ay small gym,eto na tinawag ako ni coach philip,”ikaw ba yung mag tatryout?” hinde ko alam agad ang aking isasagot?kasi pinapunta lang ako ni coach oskie and tacky duon ang alam ko mag didrills lang kami yung pala ay tryout na iyun,eh di ang sabi ko na lang ay opo sir ,at ang sabi nya to me oh sige mag bihis kana kakalabanin mo si Mario Breiva at pag tinalo mo sya ay papasok kana agad at sya ay matatangal,so kinabahan si mario kasi nga nag start na sya ng una sa akin sa training tapus eto ako kakasulpot lang biglang magtatangalan agad ,so ang sa akin lang ay hinde na bale ako hinde matanggap basta makapag laro lang ako ay ok na,but fortuantely i beat mario in that time, pero si mario hinde naman tinaggal tinakot lang ni coach philip, kasi nga kulang lang pala ng isang tao at ako nga ang lastman for the team.
So eto na naging national team nako,medyo nawala na ang galit ng aking tatay to me,kasi nga nababasa na nya sa dyaryo name,ko and yung mga request kong mga right food ay ibinigay nya,pero nag stop din duon hanggang umpisa lang ang aking tatay,kasi they got separated agad,so no support ako at all,even sa aking nanay ay wala akong natanggap na support,even hanggang sa mag retired ako being player and up to my coaching status ni hinde sila nka watch na kahit anung games,or even mag abot man lang ng isang one glass of water ay talagang wala kasi nga puro business ang inatupag ng aking tatay at ang aking nanay naman ay puro gambling(Majong and casino) so walang suport talaga from them and wala silang time for me.
a -the sacrifices you’ve made
Tama nga ang sinabi ng parents ko na pedeng maapektuhan ang aking studies during my high school days medyo nag kacut nako ng class just to practice lang,and sunudsunud ang aming mga international competition,so nag drop ako on my 4th yr high school,then natuluyan nako kong mag stop for about two years sa high school,imagine two yrs drop and two years stop parang doctorate nako sa high school hehehe, natatawa lang ako sa self ko sobrang addict ko talaga sa pingpong by that time, kaya nahirapan ako nung nag 1st yr college nako sa Univeristy of the Philippines at diliman taking up (spear) Sports Physical Education and Recreation nahirapan ako pag dating sa math and some subjects because of my poor foundation on my studies nung high school ako.So i decided nto to finish my secular studies there at UP,by that time i felt God’s calling in serving HIM fulltime,so i decided to quit the national team and at Armed Forces of the Philippines at the Philippine Army 5th Infantry division(PFC 719306)(Special Service)a pastor sponsored me to study then lumipat nako sa isang AMERICAN BIBLE COLLEGE APOSTOLIC CENTER FOR THEOLOGICAL STUDIES AND shifted to another course nag ( BST)ako Bachelor of Science in Theology and finishing a Associate degree in Theology.i stop training and decided to answer God’s calling to be a Teacher and a Preacher of God’s Holy Word.
Pero muling bumalik ang lukso at tawag ng laman to play again pingpong nasa blood stream kuna ata eto ?and best of all if you really love your sports no matter what happens you will find a place and continue to play and teach or train someone because it comes from the heart talaga,1989 ang aking graduation ang kaso kasabay eto ng 1989 National Open Table Tennis Championships at the rizal memorial complex,so hinde nako pumunta sa graduation day ko,kasi nga nakasam ako sa top8 mens single open at ang sabi ko sa sarili ko kinabukasan kuna lang kukunin ang aking diploma,kasi sabi ko since 1986 ako ang stop ng pingpong minsan na lang eto na maka tsamba na makapasok ako sa top 8 ng walang ensayo for three yrs stop ako kaya tsamba lagn na maka top 8,then meron nag resign at nagpunta ng america,kaya ayun nakapasok ako sa top 5 at naipadala kami sa 1989 SEA GAMES ,eto ang batch ko nuon si Antonio Aguinalde,Noel Gonzalez,Arnel Felipe,Fernado Valencia.
-and of course, the fruits of your labor.
My Testimony & Private Training from 1975-1995:
Please allow me once again to share my short testimony and the personal training program followed since i started to play table tennis in 1975(When i was 12 yrs old ) up to my retirement in 1995 at age 32 as a National Player.
I would like to begin by thanking all trainers,coaches and sparring partners that gave their time & effort to teach me, specifically the following people :
1.1975 - Mr.Yul Dugil,Filipino/korean,who is handicapped,and a Church Choir Director;Alfonso Medilo,a National Artist & a penholder:Crisostomo A.Magat,National Player in the 1970’s,who brought me to the Presinto Table Tennis Club.
2.1977 - Floyd J. Lobaton,from Negros,a Former National Assistant Coach.
3.1979 - All the Presinto Club Members.
4.1981-1995 - Coach Philip Pigao;Frank Gimena(deceased);Bobby Hilario;Oscar & Tacky Santelices, who introduced me to Coach Pigao,and helped me join the National Team in 1982;
5.1985 - Coach Roberto Esquejo;Benito Lim;Danilo Ybanes(deceased);Chinese Coaches Mr.Shang Ke & 1975 World Champion Mr.Xi Enting;
6.1993-1995 - Mr. Wang Rongli Head Coach of the shandong Institute of Sports shandong,China
7.2002- Mr. Roman Plese yugoslavian former nat’l team and Team mates of Primorac.
8.2005- Miss Polonia Cehovinsusin former yugoslavia nat’l player and Nat’l Junior Coach
Table Tennis is one of the most complicated of sports,requiring the SUPPLENESS & FLEXIBILITY of a Gymnast, the SPEED of a SPRINTER,the POWER of a BOXER,the STAMINA of a MARATHONER,and a TACTICAL MIND of a GRAND MASTER.All these attributes can be observed in the game of the World’s Table Tennis Greatest Players.
Table Tennis requires SKILLS,STAMINA,SUPPLENESS,SHREWDNESS,SUBTLETY,BALL CONTROL,FAST REFLEXES,NERVES OF STEEL,DILIGENCE,DEXTERITY,SNAP DECISION MAKING & TOTAL DISCIPLINE.
With all these in my mind,i tried to designed for my self a “CONSOLIDATED PERSONAL TRAINING” that incorporates the following five Aspects :
1.)TECHNICAL - Mastering the 4 kinds of Service,7 kinds of Receives,3 kinds of Timing POint,4 kinds of BallContacts, 3 kinds of Racket Angle,6 kinds of Footwork,& 7 kinds of Power;
2.)PHYSICAL TRAINING :
A. Stamina -Running daily for atleast one hour;
B. Speed -Sprintings & stairs running,table touch,and use of Multi Balls;
C.Suppleness & Flexibility - Stretching(Static & ballistic movements)
D. Power & Strength - Weight training,using dumbells,push,pull,sit ups & flyiometrics by jumping exercises;
E. Balancing - shadowing with racket & footwroks, and skipping rope.
3.)EMOTIONAL - Not thinking of problems during practice or competition;always thinking positive and moving on despite setbacks;
4.)SPIRITUAL - Always coming to God in prayer before practice & competition.(John 15:5″…because with out the Lord you can do nothing.” ).
5.) MENTAL - Analyzing opponent’s weak and strong points;circuit training or playing in different places for exposure to different balls,tables and environments, which helps overcome pressures in competition.
I Hope this helps the reader and aspiring player.
Truly yours

P.S
Parati kong sinasabi eto sa mga inspirational talk ko sa mga Milo summer training and to all my clinics to all kids and beginners there, that even though i have no support from my parents both in time,moral and financial but by the grace of God nakamit ko ang aking gustong makamit,and to all blessed kids there na merong very supportive na mga parents both in moral and in financial,mas mahihigitan pa ninyo ang aking naabot.
If i can do it, you can do it also much better pa.
I would like to bring back all the glories and praises to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Amen

Dear Coach Jet Yatco,
I have the privilage to meet, play and train under this pilar and one of the best mentors in Philippine Table Tennis history. A person who I may say has the discipline, heart and soul in Table Tennis as a sport a life long passion.
I have been with Coach Jet since 1992 but knowing him and say his speedy plays in the Presinto Sinko days, I was a loyal member though. i have been hooked with the sport because of this drive to meet the health boundaries of my self, and develop a self esteem to be a health buff. More over that I met Jet and train under him together with Philip Uy, Jocson Que and others in the Phil. Chinese Cultural School under the supervision of Mr. Benito Lim, which we also praise for his contributive support of the sport.
Jet Yatco did loaded me skills, techniques, strokes that till now I have in my heart to play good in my own skill and play. The training was really detailed, unified and organized to meet my peek performance in table tennis. The approach that he delivered was scientific and by his due experience it really paid off. I may not play ni the nationals but in some unsunged tournaments across the Philippines I may say I zoom my game to be a champ and used that championship points under the traning and coaching of Mr. Jet Yatco. He is truelly a JET in the table tennis arena.
So I invite everyone to partake this opportunity, and discover it yourselves what I have experience training professional table tennis under Jet Yatco’s coaching.
It is also true that his last words are “its good that some are fortunate to have the support and care of the parents in this sport” for him that I’ve with jet yatco, is self reliance and determination to reach his dream.
So reach your dreams to be a top professional table tennis player, train under Jet Yatco’s wings and fly….
To you coach Jet Happy Birthday and more power, God bless you Jet

Coach Jet,
I would say you are my 1st World Class coach. I was an avid rec player in my younger days. One summer, araw-araw ang laro 6am-6pm. Minsan kahit medyo madilim na laro pa rin.
Pag-immigrate ko sa US I did not know where to play, so I was not able to play regularly until I moved here in Colorado.
I really thought my 1st coach here was great. Akala marami na akong natutunan. Not until I lived back in Manila in 2003 and found Coach Jet did my eyes really open up to the knowledge and skills I wanted to have.
He taught me the asian (chinese) way of playing. Small compact technique, footwork, positioning, importance of backhand loop.
Suwerte ko na lang na pagbalik ko sa US 2 former World Champions live and coach in Colorado Springs. At least the foundation that Coach Jet gave me na-dadagdagan.
Happy Birthday!!!

I never met coach jet ever since. Narinig ko lang pangalan nya when I have the chance to chat Cebu’s greatest legendary TT icon last 2006 Jawad Cup. His name was the infamous “Ronnie Baharias”. According to Ronnie, dalawa lang ang players na hanga sya from the national region– Rey Domingo and Jet Yatco. Malupet daw si coach jet sa backhand.
The only common to me and coach jet ay pareho kaming me anak na actively naglalaro nang pingpong. I think 14 years old din anak ni coach. I hope na mag meet sila this coming Palarong Pambansa to be held in Palawan.
Yeah, I know the lion brand coach, “shield” (color green both rubbers) and first decent racket ko.
My comment on parents support for the kid pongers:
1. Ian Lariba has the support both from her mom and dad. You can see them during the tournaments.
2. Same is true for Dan-dan Tormis from Cebu.
3. The Benoya brothers have the full support from their father.
4. Me also, I show to my junior a 100% support but I’m not the one coaching him during tourney. I let his coach to do the job without any hesitation.
Ang mahirap lang these days ay nde na naa-addict ang mga kids sa sports. They prefer “computer online gaming”. For only 10 pesos ay makapag-laro na sila for one hour. One more thing, karamihan sa kids na magaling sa pingpong ay magaling din sa PC games due to their superb hand and eyes coordination. If they excel in PC games, dito na nila mai-iwanan ang pingpong. To me, close monitoring talaga sa mga kids who are addicted to PC games. Mahirap din ‘pag napabayaan at wala kang alam about computers.

first of all coach jet belated happy birthday, i read your story and i admired your determination and sincerity. It was indeed, very inspiring. despite of what you went through you still continue to pursued your dream to become a table tennis champion. eventually, you became a TABLE TENNIS CHAMPION. I do hope that your story will continue to inspire aspiring table tennis player to make their dream come true. The lesson that i’ve learned in your story that success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. HAPPY BIRTHDAY and more birthday to come. GOD BLESS

“There are no half-hearted champions” — That’s a line that I read in a book once upon a time. Coach Jet’s story is a story of courage and determination. Without these, a man can’t sacrifice. And if a man is unwilling to sacrifice, then he will never succeed.
You can tell through Coach Jet’s words and his actions that he is deeply determined to be the best in what he does. That’s something that sets him apart from other people.
It’s always good to keep the fire burning — so that it can be passed around. Youngsters just starting out on their own personnal journeys will always need role models, who they will look back upon as a reference. This is a good story to tell them.
For Coach Jet, one year older means you one year wiser.
Happy birthday, Coach. Have a good one.

Jet,
Thanks for helping all pongers. The philippine sports authority should know who is willing to help and should be in place. Why not have a forum from all Good coaches locally, have a collective infos and share this to all the clubs from north to south and maybe have a visit quarterly to see the improvements.

Before I get started on my testi, happy belated b-day Coach Jet… Now… About testimonial… it’s very… very… very… long… no, just kidding… that’s really one powerful, heartfelt article I’ve read in quite a while… I haven’t known coach jet for a long time but from what I see from my trainings with him, he really gives full attention to anyone who is interested and has the will to learn what he has to teach… I’ve missed my trainings with him at Ateneo… I’m already itching for May this coming year to start my training again from scratch… But I don’t care because I still remember that same feeling I got when I started playing Table Tennis… Everyone was eager to teach me and I got to meet a lot of other players… different ages, different ranks… It really is so fun that you often forget the fatigue and the muscle sores… It’s hard when its only you who believes in your self and no one else but when you, indeed, think about it… you are never alone, God is always there… That’s right, coach… we shouldn’t give up just because you’ve only got your self and God… If that’s how everybody thinks then coach jet would never have achieved all those accomplishments mentioned… Thank you coach for your lessons and the guidance you gave me while I was under your training… Don’t worry, I’ll start training again this May… I just need to rest this following months… Hope to have more birthdays to come and more power to you and Jay-r…
