Female international umpire

Articles, News Add comments

Ms. Rachel RamosMs. Rachel Ramos, the secretary-general of the Table Tennis Association of North District (TATAND) has just returned from her impressive umpire’s duty at the 49th Ever Grande World Table Tennis Team Championships held in Guangzhou, China, from 23rd February to 3rd March 2008. Ms. Ramos is indeed very much grateful for being given the opportunity to work in this ITTF’s major event and consequently gaining a lot of needed exposure and experience in international umpiring.

It was a stroke of luck for her as, on the last part of 2007, her name was selected to join the list of visiting foreign umpires to this WTTC 2008 from numerous nominations received by the ITTF Umpires and Referees Committee (URC) from different Associations worldwide. Undeniably, it was of big help that the ITTF URC has been very supportive of the female participation on the sport.

It seemed that luck was still with her during the World Championships early this month because she was assigned to umpire at the centre court (Table 1) at the main hall with full live TV coverage. What’s more, the match given to her was the Division 1 of the Men’s Team with teams of China and Austria playing. Not only did she rise to the challenge and unfazed by the China players Wang Hao and Wang Liqin playing on her table, the praises she received afterwards were enough proof that she did her job well and met expectations.

Even with the sorry absence of the Philippine team to this prestigious ITTF event, the name of the Philippines was still mentioned at the main hall for the whole table tennis world to hear, even for an instant. The local table tennis community can still be consoled with the fact that even no Filipino team joined in this World Championships, the country (and the Association) was still very much represented. Thanks to Ms. Ramos and her insatiable zest for honing her umpiring skills to be at par with the world standard.

For the information of everyone, Ms. Ramos, a no-nonsense person, holds the distinction of being the first and only female ITTF umpire in the Philippines, a feat she achieved almost four years ago when she passed the ITTF IU examination in 2004. From then on, she has been accepting invitations for umpiring in tournaments mostly in South East Asia.

We, at TATAND, are taking pride of having you as one of us. You make TATAND proud of your accomplishments as one young and good table tennis umpire and official, not only locally but internationally. Keep up the good work!
