UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas and Far Eastern U dominated their separate events in the first round of 71st UAAP table tennis team event tournament over the weekend at the Ateneo Blue Eagles gym in Katipunan, Quezon City.
The men’s defending champion UST Tigers of coach Henberd Ortalla swept their six-game assignment in Saturday’s opening and Sunday, while last year’s champion FEU Lady Tamaraws of coach Noel Gonzales also did the same thing in women’s.
UST high school squad, gunning for a grand slam feat in the junior’s level, also won its six-game assignment in the first round of the event organized by the newly-managed Table Tennis Association of the Philippines (TATAP).
UST, winner of 21 titles in the men’s division, swept the University of the East, 3-0, in first match, and then defeated La Salle U (3-1), Ateneo (3-0), FEU (3-0), UP (3-1) and National University (3-0).
FEU, who is looking for a back-to-back crown, crushed NU (3-0), Ateneo (3-0), La Salle (3-0), FEU (3-1) and UST (3-2) to stay unscathed in the women’s event.
The junior’s squad of UST walloped Ateneo (3-0), Adamson (3-1), La Salle-Zobel (3-0), UE (3-2), NU (3-0) and UP (3-0) to top the division.
Adamson did not participate in the men’s and women’s event for second consecutive year except in junior level, while UE did not join the women’s event and FEU did not participate in junior division.
If UST, FEU and UST’s junior team swept their respective events next weekend in the second round at the same venue, they will successfully retain their crowns.
But if not, the No. 1 and No. 2 teams which armed with a twice-to-beat advantage battle the No. 4 and No. 3 teams, respectively, in a semifinal crossover match.
Table Tennis first round team standings: UST (6-0), FEU (5-1), UE (3-3), UP (4-2), La Salle (2-4), Ateneo (1-6) and NU (0-6).
Women’s team standings: FEU (5-0), UST (4-1), La Salle (3-2), UP (2-3), Ateneo (1-4) , NU (0-5).
Junior’s team standings: UST (6-0), UE (5-1), Ateneo (4-2), UP (3-3), Adamson (2-4), NU (1-5) La Salle 0-6Â
