Pictures of Liha and Hardbat Players from 1940-50

March 8, 2010 in News by Harry

Here are memorable pictures dated back after the World War II from Coach Freddie Ibañez (former National Coacch). Americans brought table tennis to us more than a decade earlier than the famous Ping Pong diplomacy in China.

Thanks to Peter Cua who brought Liha into international spotlight, he was Cebu to witness the 1st Serging Osmeña’s Cup and at the same time to hunt for priceless pictures.

ITTF VIPs in the Philippines

“The second reason of our visit to Philippines was to experience the vintage game Liha; a table tennis game where the players use sandpaper instead of the rubbers”, continued Dr Miran Kondric. “It’s the game which is played only in Philippines and in the USA, at the local club in Malabon City we were amazed by the warm hospitality and the perfect lesson provided for this vintage game.” – Dr Miran Kondric

“The Filipinos are probably the best hosts you will find in the world even though people mostly aren’t “rich” in their wallets, they are very rich in their hearts; everywhere you can witness their hospitality”, smiled Dr Miran Kondric. They will never show you that they have to struggle through the life, even now when typhoons have reached their country, so it was a great honor for us to have been invited to come to their country.” – Dr Miran Kondric

Acknowledgment to the ATTY Nepomuceno and the “team of Malabon”

November 5, 2009 in News by Harry

[Download the letter in PDF]

Dear “liha” friends from Malabon!
On behalf of my own and on behalf of Dr. Gordana Furjan-Mandic as well as Dr.
Nicolae Ochiana, I would like to express my deepest thanks for your very warm
welcome and kindness during our stay at your club. As Peter invited us to visit
Philippines and made us acquainted with the game named “Liha”, we had no clue
what that means in real world. All the three of us had in mind that this is similar to the
table tennis game but only with the old roots. What a mistake! Although we are all
scientists and I am supposed to be an expert in table tennis, I felt like a firstyear
student in the college. Before our trip Peter gave me some information regarding
“Liha”, but it is always something different when you read about or when you see it
live. Read the rest of this entry →

In behalf of my colleague Mr. Peter Cua, I would like to give my heartfelt appreciation to the three European guests namely: Prof. dr. Miran Kondric (Slovenia), Prof. dr. Nicolae Ochiana (Romania)and Prof. dr. Gordana Furjan-Mandic (Croatia) for sharing their expertise during the recently concluded seminar workshop held in U.P. NCPAG and CHK gym last October 21, 2009. IN addiiton to that, they also donated top of the line Tibhar table tennis equipment to young kids during the recently concluded Vicente Hao Chin Sr. Memorial Cup National Inter-scholastics Table Tennis Championships held in Ateneo.
I am sharing you some of the handouts given during the event. I also have with me  three(3) DVD copies which includes:
